MOT Tests

It would seem that 1 in 10 of Britain’s motorists are shy about car maintenance. As research by LV discovered, over 1 in 10 admit they are not happy carrying out checks or basic car care before their MOT test.

Even though most drivers know a quick look over their vehicle could save them time and money, more than half of surveyed motorists are reluctant to check their headlights and indicators are working. Lights were the number 1 cause of instant MOT failures in 2016, accounting for 18.9% of all test fails.

This is just a portion of the 35.3% of tests that were failed instantly in the same year, according to the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Basic car maintenance, it is predicted, could avoid 50% of all MOT failures.

In addition, only 38% of motorists would be happy to change a tyre. The statistics point to a lack of confidence in the basic maintenance of cars. The cumulative effect of which causes unnecessary harm to drivers, the environment and damage to vehicles.

What you can do to avoid MOT test failure

There are just a few quick checks you can make to your car so that it avoids an MOT failure. Remember, over half of test failures can be avoided with some simple tips and tricks. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on these things all year round, too:

Service History: Keep your paperwork up to date and stored together in one place so it’s easy to find and see your car’s service history.

Engine Management System: The warning lights on your dash are there to point out faults that are developing in your car and to remind you about certain safety features. If any lights are illuminated on your dash, look up what they mean (if you are unsure) and see if you can easily fix the fault.

Lights, mirrors, and glass: Check all these items for wear, damage and poor repair. They are all important and are checked over by your MOT tester for your safety.

Tyres: Check the tread depth of the tyres and the sidewalls for tears, bulges and foreign items like nails.

Other factors: Does the car track straight and true as you drive? Are there any knocks and bangs from the engine? Does the exhaust produce excess smoke? These are just some of the signs that your car needs booking in for a thorough inspection, service and/or repairs.
