electric car MOT

With electric cars now on the rise, although they run differently to regular, non-hybrid cars, they still need to have an annual MOT test after they turn three years old. But considering their difference to regular cars, what exactly does an electric car MOT involve?

Just like a normal MOT, the test is compulsory and is designed to examine all aspects of the car’s components and functionality, to judge its roadworthiness with the one exception of the emissions test.

Headlights, wipers and horn

Headlights are tested to make sure they are aligned correctly and are the right brightness, height and distance from the other headlights so they don’t dazzle oncoming traffic, but serve their purpose of lighting up the road ahead.

Following a check on the headlights, all other lights on the car are tested, including brake and taillights, fog lights and hazard lights. It is also important to have a functioning horn, as a faulty or non-existent horn could result in a failed MOT, straightaway.

Corrosion

There will then be an inspection of the whole vehicle for corrosion using one specially designed tool. The general purpose of this is to check the components for rust, this includes those under the bonnet and those underneath the car, so the vehicle will need to be lifted. When looking underneath the car, there will be checks on the car’s chassis, mounting brackets, sills and hinges, to make sure everything is in good condition.

Mechanics

The final and most technical part of the MOT test is the testing of the mechanical components. This includes things such as, steering, brakes, suspension, shock absorbers and wheel bearings. For instance, the steering is tested and all the wheels are spun to check for any excess wear and tear.

So, aside from the main difference that there is no emissions test run on electric cars, you will hopefully see that there are still plenty of things your vehicle needs to be tested for. So if it has passed its third birthday, make sure you get it booked in to your local garage as soon as possible.
