car servicing

Getting your car serviced regularly is an important aspect of keeping your vehicle healthy and safe, but there are a number of misconceptions out there that can distort the image of servicing for the worse that should be addressed. Therefore, in the second of this month’s articles, we’ll be looking at – and debunking – just a few of these myths so you can start benefiting from a regular, professional service without apprehension today.

Myth 1: Servicing Costs the Same Every Year

Unfortunately, a service does not cost the same every year. Although you may be able to assume that every other year the service will be cheaper (i.e. the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) because these services are on the whole more basic, on the interim years the service may cost significantly more depending on the parts that may need attention or replacing. Ultimately, it varies and a straight answer is impossible.

Myth 2: Servicing Your Car Anywhere Won’t Invalidate the Warranty

While this one is partly true, it is likely that your warranty states that you should not use non-manufacturer parts on the vehicle. Doing so could invalidate the warranty. To clarify, you can have your car serviced anyway and uphold the warranty, but if your car needs new parts you will invalidate the warranty if generic parts, not those from your car’s manufacturer, are used.

Myth 3: Servicing Always Takes the Same Amount of Time

Depending on the service that your car is having, it may be a quicker service or a longer one. The checks and components required for the service your car is due could influence the duration of the service in one way or the other, so ask at your garage before your next service to get a better grasp on this matter.

Myth 4: Servicing Must Be Done at the Same Time Every Year

Servicing works differently to an MOT, namely in that you get some room to maneuver with a service. You can wait a few weeks to have your service done if you simply can’t afford it or you’re too busy to find the time and you won’t be penalised. As a general rule of thumb, you should have the car serviced once a year or every 12,000 miles.

Myth 5: Servicing Is Always Covered By My Warranty

Your warranty covers material faults that would not be expected by the manufacturer to need repair or replacement at the very least before the end of the warranty. Servicing, on the other hand, is there to care for the parts of your vehicle that suffer from wear and tear and are expected to be replaced regularly; as a result, servicing is not covered by your warranty.
